Some people have already accepted the idea that they are doomed to baldness. While it’s true that hair loss is a biological reality that we will all need to face eventually, there is such as thing as premature and excessive hair loss. You don’t have to accept that hair loss is controlled solely by genetics. Believe it or not, there are some things that you can do to help reduce or even reverse hair loss.

A wholesome diet may be the key to slowing down excessive and unhealthy hair loss. Here are a few types of food that you can eat, together with the benefits that they give related to the health of your hair:

  • Silica-rich foods – Silica is often added as an ingredients in natural hair loss supplements. It strengthens your existing hair strands and slows down your body’s aging process. Food that are rich in silica are whole grains, soybeans, some kinds of seafood, brown rice, vegetables with dark green leaves, and herbs such as alfalfa and horsetail. When eating silica-rich foods, it’s best to eat them raw whenever applicable. If it’s not possible to eat them raw, it’s best to not wash it too much or overcook it because trace minerals can easily be removed that way.
  • Iron-rich foods – Anemia is also linked to the weakening of hair follicles and advancing hair loss. To address this, eat iron-rich foods such as vegetables with dark green leaves, eggs, whole grains and some types of organ meat like liver. You may also take iron supplements however, it’s best to consult with a doctor before trying this.
  • Protein-rich foods – Eating protein-rich food will also keep your hair healthy and encourage the growth of new hair. Pick healthy sources of protein that will not contain too much fat. A fat rich diet can be detrimental to the health of your hair and follicles.
  • Vitamin E-rich foods – Vitamin E also slows down the aging process of the body. In effect, this prevents the drying up of hair follicles. Foods that are rich in Vitamin E include olive oil, nuts, avocados, and others.
  • Iodine-rich foods – There are types of thyroid issues that can result to noticeable hair loss. To counteract this, you can eat foods rich in Iodine and Vitamin A. Iodine rich foods include spinach, sea salt (or rock salt), turnips, soy beans, pine nuts, walnuts and the likes.

Before attempting to drastically modify your diet, consult a dietician. It’s important that you have a good understanding of the daily dietary requirement of your body. This is to make sure that you don’t get too little or too much of a certain type of nutrient. For instance, an excessive intake of Vitamin A can actually encourage hair loss instead of stopping it.
