Understanding Proper Hair Care to Prevent Hair Loss
If you still have a full head of hair, you may not think much of hair loss problems. You just don’t typically worry about something that hasn’t happened yet. The reality is that hair loss will come eventually, that it’s never a pleasant experience when it happens earlier than you thought it would. You may not think that it’s any cause for alarm when you see a lot of stray hair in your shower drain or on your pillow when you get up in the morning until you’re beginning to experience noticeable thinning on your scalp.
Hair loss prevention is usually easier to maintain than hair loss treatments. Taking the time to learn what habits are harmful to your hair and which will help improve its health will benefit you in the future.
Except for suffering from serious health conditions, it’s pretty much normal for people to lose hair. About 90% of the total hair on your scalp is in the process of growing at any given time. The other 10% are in their “resting” phase, which means that they’re falling out. However there are some factors that contribute to excessive hair loss. One of which is age-related.
Hair loss doesn’t have to come too early or too sudden in your life. The simplest thing that you can do for yourself is to take care of your hair and chances are, you increase the possibility that you’ll keep them on your head longer.
Here are a few hair care tips that you can follow to prevent premature hair loss:
- Take extra care of your hair if you wear them in dreadlocks, cornrows, and the likes. These types of hairstyles put a lot of stress on your roots because it pulls the hair tightly from your scalp. Sometimes excessive pulling may lead to some small wounds on the scalp and eventually, some scab formation. If the hair continues to be pulled from the scalp while the wounds or the scabs are healing, it will cause scarring which leads to permanent hair loss. This type of hair loss may be unsightly because you’ll probably be bald in some spots and not in others.
- If you insist on wearing dreadlocks and cornrows or similar hair styles, at least let your hair and scalp rest once in a while. Schedule a regular time when your hair is not pulled back from the scalp to give it some time to recover.
- Avoid tying up your hair in a tight ponytail or pigtails.
- Avoid excessive use of hair products, especially hair dyes. Put a space of at least five to eight weeks before you dye your hair again. Excessive use of hair colors can irritate your scalp.
- Try using hair products that are herbal or organic. You’ll want to use as little chemicals on your hair as possible. Some studies show that using herbal products can also prevent certain types of cancer because our body tends to absorb chemicals that we put on our selves such as cosmetics, shampoos, hair spray and the likes.
