The quest to restore the hair you lost can be a long one. If you’ve permanently lost your hair through age or any other health conditions, hair transplant surgery may be the most viable option to grow it back.

Hair transplants are being offered all over the country and in many other countries all over the world. However, it’s best to be very careful in choosing the kind of operation to undergo and the medical experts you entrust yourself to. You might save a lot of money by going to clinics that offer cheaper services, but why put yourself at risk? You may end up paying a higher price for a botched up surgery.

In considering what type of surgery to choose, it’s good to learn which techniques are outdated and why they’re supposed to be crossed off your list already. Some of these outdated techniques may still be offered in some clinics in the country and abroad because it takes up a lot of resources to update techniques. Aside from the process of training for the procedure, the medical staff also has to get sufficient training, and the facilities needed to accommodate updated hair transplant techniques need to be implemented as well.

Some of the techniques that are not so advisable to get anymore are:

  • Scalp Reduction – This is also known as Alopecia Reduction and is done by taking off the scalp that has already lost the ability to grow hair. For male pattern baldness, that’s usually at the top of the temple. The parts with hair are then drawn closer together and then sewed to close off the part where the bald part was taken off. Aside from being very unattractive to look at, scalp reduction can also cause infection, accelerated hair loss to the rest of the scalp that still has hair, and other drastic effects. Another effect is stretch back where the stretched part of the scalp pulls back to expose the bald spot, this happens to almost 100% of scalp reduction operations.
  • Linear Grafts – Strips of scalp are removed from the sides or back of the head to transplant to the bald spots. The strips are usually 4 mm wide and cannot be transplanted in units or in small areas on the scalp. As a result, some trenches have to be created on the scalp to accommodate the width of the donor grafts. The problem with this is that in the long run it doesn’t look natural, which defeats the purpose of hair transplant.
  • Free-form Flap – A flap of the scalp is partially cut off and moved to the front of the hairline. The flap is not totally cut off from the scalp; it is still connected to the blood supply. Not only is this cosmetically unattractive, it may also cause death to the transplanted flap, making a big scar on the scalp.

Before going under the knife for a hair transplant, it’s best to do some extensive research about the methods.

To avoid early onset of hair loss, exercise daily, eat a healthy diet, and take natural hair growth supplements such as Provillus.
