Avoiding Habits That Encourage Hair Loss
Having abundant, shiny, lustrous hair has often been associated with good health and beauty. This is especially true with women; hence there are so many things that have been invented to make your hair “more beautiful”. Going in a beauty salon is like going out to shop. There are so many things that you can try and so many things that you can do to make your hair look more beautiful. You can blow dry it, use the curling iron, use rollers, hot oil, straighten, style, color, perm, rebond, and many, many more.
The pitfall of chasing too much after these things is that you forget to take into consideration the health of your hair, scalp, and follicles. In effect, harming what you meant to improve.
Hair is made up of three layers. The inner fibers are called the medulla, the fibers in the middle are called the cortex, and the cuticle is the outer layer that protects the medulla and cortex from damage. The follicle is part of the skin or scalp that produces hair and houses sebum-producing glands that nourishes and provides natural oil to the hair. The bigger the follicles, the thicker and stronger the hair they will produce. People with thin strands of hair have smaller hair follicles. People who suffer from baldness oftentimes have follicles that have shrunk or have become unhealthy. On the other hand, abusing your hair through exposing it to too much styling and chemicals can greatly damage the cuticles. Damaging the cuticles exposes the more fragile fibers inside it, causing the hair to become more breakable, dry, or fall off easily from the scalp.
Here are a few things that you should minimize or avoid to discourage hair loss and damage:
- Bleaching – Removes the natural pigmentation of the hair by penetrating the cuticle and changing the color through chemicals. This greatly weakens the cuticles and results to weaker hair.
- Perming – Changing the form of your hair by using chemicals to straighten or curl it. This also damages the cuticles and the entire makeup of your hair.
- Coloring – The effects of coloring or dyeing hair may not be as harmful as bleaching but excessive use of this can also be harmful to the hair cuticles. It’s advisable to let your hair rest for about 5-8 weeks before attempting to color it again.
- Blow-drying – This exposes your hair to extreme heat in order to make it more manageable. Over a long period of time, it changes the texture of the cuticles and in effect weakens your hair strands.
- Too much shampooing – Ideally, shampooing can help clean your scalp and remove dirt that can cause bacteria to form. However, using too much shampoo and conditioners too frequently can also strip your scalp of the natural oils necessary in maintaining the health of your hair strands and follicles.
Use moderation when doing anything to your hair. It’s advisable to put some hair products on the hair before you subject it to styling or heat. Taking care of your hair as well as eating the right kind of food and taking natural supplements such as Provillus can effectively prevent hair loss.
